About ASPIRE
ASPIRE is an innovative project being run in southern England and northern France until 2023 with the aim of tackling the joint problems of obesity and unemployment in a holistic way. There is a link between the two - the longer someone is unemployed, the more likely they are to have problems with their weight and vice versa - and ASPIRE is piloting a model to help people live healthier lives and increase their employability skills. Dover District Council, Your Leisure Ltd, Kent County Council and Kent Community NHS Health Foundation Trust are working with Bechange in Aylesham to create one of the three UK ASPIRE hubs.
The project will follow a 'grow your own, eat your own, sell your own’ ethos and we will be creating a kitchen garden and orchard, helping people to build up their job skills and improve their overall health and wellbeing. Other services, such as NHS One You, Wellbeing People, local businesses and other agencies, will also help those taking part to achieve their goals, whether these are to lose weight, learn new skills, to eat healthily on a budget, to do some voluntary work, to improve their CV or even to start up a small business.
An early stage of ASPIRE involved engaging with local community members in Aylesham to identify their priorities in relation to producing, buying and eating healthier food, increasing physical activity and the built environment. This was led by ASPIRE partner C3 Collaborating for Health, using a community engagement tool called CHESSTM. The resulting CHESS Action Plan contains ideas for changes that the local community can make to live more healthily in Aylesham. The Project Team Leader is responsible for supporting the ASPIRE project coordinators implementation of the CHESS Action Plan as part of ASPIRE.
